I was lucky enough to test ride the S5 and A5 in selected brand stores in Amsterdam last August, and I can confidently say that the final product exceeded my expectations. The S5 boasts a sleek design and high-quality buttons, and the new package material keeps all parts secure and protected.
One of the standout features for me was the improved motor cable. I even made a YouTube video about my struggles with the motor cable on previous models, but I’m happy to report that the S5’s cable was a breeze to connect.
Riding the S5 is an exhilarating experience. It’s fast, responsive, and shifts smoothly. The torque sensor is impressive, and the acceleration will blow your mind. I clocked 0 to 30 km in just 5.5 seconds. The bike can easily reach 28–30 km on a flat road, making it better than the S3’s EU mode.
The bike’s firmware is currently at v1.0.0, and I haven’t found any new features or uses for the additional buttons. However, there is a new and exciting feature — riders can now flash the front light. The front and rear lights are always on, and when the bike is stationary, the lights give off a breathing effect, similar to the matrix display. The lights are very bright, especially the headlight, which is visible from far away.
Some people have complained about battery drain when the bike is stationary, but I haven’t experienced this. I started riding with 99% battery and after 6.5 km, it dropped to 87%. With the boost and support level at 4, I was able to get 54 km with a full battery, which is more than acceptable.
Aesthetically, I still think the S3 has a superior design, but the S5’s color, finish, and bright lights have made a great impression on many people. I would love to see the chain tensioner and its box applied to the S3, as well as all other electronic parts like the e-shifter, kick lock, and lights.
The S3/X3 are known for their squeaky brakes, but I find them acceptable, especially when riding in the city. However, the new ventilated disk design has fixed this issue, and now the new bell sound ‘Ping’ is a great success, replacing the ‘Party Horn’. I am looking forward to the custom bell sound upload functionality.
The SP Connect adapter is easily replaceable with the SPC+ adapter, so if you already have the SPC+ case, there’s no need to worry. All you need is a minute and an Allen Key №3.
Overall, the VanMoof S5 feels like the S3 when riding uphill, but it’s more reliable thanks to the torque sensor. When you stand up and hit the pedals hard, it waits until you release pressure before shifting. The pedals have the same grip as the S5 and A5.
In conclusion, the VanMoof S5/A5 and S3/X3 are impressive bikes that offer a smooth and exciting ride. Don’t forget to use the code ADV-Y78Q-4S9G-HEM7 at checkout to save on accessories and PoM services.
